Therapeutic Principles
Basically Psychoanalysis is a
theory of how each child’s complex, imaginative inner life, interacting with
the environment, becomes intrapsychically structured, and later, is played out
in his or her ongoing family life, relationships and in the work place.
Leon Hoffman, MD
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PSYCHODYNAMIC AND PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY:
-Much of mental life is unconscious.
-Childhood experiences in concert with genetic factors shape adult life.
-Patient’s transference to the therapist is a primary source of understanding.
-The therapist’s countertransference provides valuable understanding about what the patient induces in others.
-The patient’s resistance to the therapy process is a major focus of the therapy.
-Symptoms and behaviors serve multiple functions and are determined by complex and often unconscious factors.
-A psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapist assists the patient in achieving a sense of authenticity and uniqueness.
Glenn O. Gabbard, MD
There is no psychotherapy without a therapeutic relationship. Because it is, in the safety of this relationship, that the problems, conflicts, anxieties, insecurities, inhibitions and mood and personality disorders, will be played out and re-experienced, understood and changed.
